The N'Namdi Center for Contemporary Art will hold its Grand Opening on Saturday, October 9, 2010 and Sunday, October 10, 2010, at its incredible new space in the Sugar Hill Arts District in Detroit. This enchanting evening will kick-off with an all night party at the Center, starting at 8 pm on October 9th where guests will be immersed in fine art through gallery shows, live music, spoken word, a fashion show and performance art and ending the party with morning yoga at 6am. The Center will then reopen in the afternoon on Sunday, October 10th at 2pm where there will be artist lectures and book signings. This innovative art center operates as a Michigan nonprofit under the fiduciary of University Cultural Center Association.
The N'Namdi Center for Contemporary Art, founded by N'Namdi Gallery owner George N'Namdi consists of an expansive 16,000 square feet including: 4 exhibition spaces, indoor and outdoor performance spaces, an outdoor sculpture garden, and a movement/yoga center. Also housed in the N'Namdi Center are independently run businesses: Seva, a vegetarian restaurant making its debut to the Detroit area, a gift and bookstore, a wine bar, G.R. N'Namdi Gallery and and two other art galleries.
Inspired by 30 years as a gallery owner and a new generation of collectors and their appreciation and enthusiasm for contemporary African American and Latin American art, we have created a new nonprofit center to grow an even larger audience for the arts. The Center will increase awareness of leading African American, Latin American and other contemporary artists through exhibitions. This center will also give local artists a home to exhibit their work and our black box provides a venue for performance art and experiential theatre.
In addition, the center will also inspire and educate people about contemporary art, in particular those created by African American and Latin Americans, by offering juried shows, lectures, publications, retrospectives, art invitational, family programming, and an artist in residence program.
